Schools National Championship Year 11 Finals Held
The Schools National Championship Year 11 Finals were played on January 25 at the Cottonera Sports Complex. Organised by the Malta Volleyball Association in collaboration with the Education Department and SportMalta, the event forms part of the CEV School Project.
This Final phase followed the Qualifying Round held earlier in December, where 13 teams played for access to this Final phase. Four male and four female teams came through that round to the finals. The qualifying teams participated in a round-robin competition, with matches played on a best out of three sets basis.
In the males’ competition, the finalist schools were Savio College, St Paul’s Missionary College, SGPC Hamrun Secondary and MRC Lily of the Valley Mosta Secondary, with SGPC Hamrun Secondary being the eventual winners.
Female category winners MRC Zokrija Mosta Secondary saw off the challenge posed by the other finalists STMC St Lucia secondary, STMC Zejtun Secondary and MRC Lily of the Valley Mosta Secondary.
The matches, played in the presence of Mr Goran Ilic, Head Coach of the Malta Senior and Junior National Selections, were played in a highly competitive environment. Whilst both eventual winners ended the finals with 3 wins out of 3 matches, all games were very close and hard fought, with half of them going in the third set.
In line with its continued focus on the promotion of volleyball amongst youths, the Malta Volleyball Association will be organising the 2023 CEV Small Countries Association Junior Women’s Championships in April 2023, which will feature the Under 18 national teams from Malta, Gibraltar, Ireland, Luxembourg, Northern Ireland and San Marino.
