Flyers close the gap on Fleur de Lys
Paola Hibs – Flyers 0-3 (12-25,11-25,19-25)
The first game of the New Year saw Flyers overcoming Paola Hibs 3-0.Flyers
piled up early pressure on their opponents with good serves from Dorianne
Bonnici and Belinda Milton and opened up an 8-4 lead at the first
technical time-out. Flyers’ new signing, Gertrude Zarb, helped with her
vast experience of the game and Flyers easily won the first set 25-12.
Paola Hibs tried to change the game by moving Maria Gatt to play as an
outside spiker but this had no effect on a solid Flyers team. Belinda
Milton managed to obtain 12 points with her service to increase the lead
from 6-4 to 18-4. Paola Hibs never recovered and Flyers easily closed the
set 25-11. Services played an important role in the third set as rallies
were rather short and even though, Charles Gauci, Flyers’ coach decided to
play all his players, Flyers went on to win the game without any problems
with Belinda Milton earning the player of the match.
Fleur de Lys office Group -Toyota Playvolley 2-3 (20-25, 24-26, 25-16,
26-24, 13-15)
This was an important match for both teams. FDL were missing their regular
setter Sarah El Gasi, while Playvolley started their new signings outside
hitter Alison Borg and opposite player Caroline Sciberras .Both players
improved an already competitive Playvolley team and were crucial to help
their team. The second set was very important for the game especially as
Playvolley narrowly closed the set 26-24 to take a 2-0 lead. However, a
focused FDL appeared in the third set and they caused all sorts of
problems to Playvolley to easily win the third set 25-16 in their favour.
The fourth set was quite dramatic as Playvolley were a point away from
winning the match with the score 24-23 in their favour. However, they made
a number of mistakes and ended up losing the set 24-26. The final set saw
a more focused Playvolley side and they used their attack to gain an 8-3
lead. However, after some useful substitutions FDL improved their services
and drew the score at 8-8 and at this point the game moved on point by
point until Playvolley opened a narrow gap at 13-11. But this was not
enough as FDL made a comeback to draw 13-13, but the drama was not over as
FDL committed two final errors to allow Playolley to close the match and
inflict the first defeat on FDL.
